Rosalie was given Little Bear Won't Sleep! (by Christine Swift) by her Aunty quite a few months ago and it is lovely - the illustrations are gorgeous and it's a really sweet going-to-bed story.
The story features Little Bear, who wants to stay up all night because he just isn't tired! He thinks of all the fun things he could do if he stayed awake.
Little Bear and Mother Bear go for a walk into the forest, to meet some of the animals who are awake. He makes friends with an owl, a fox, a bat and a hedgehog.
But staying up all night and meeting so many new animals is a tiring business, and Mother Bear turns around to find Little Bear asleep by the foot of a tree, so she carries him home to bed.
In the morning, Little Bear awakes with excitement at the thought of going to visit all his new friends, but when he goes into the forest he can't find Owl, Bat or Hedgehog. He is so disappointed.
Mother Bear explains to Little Bear that the animals he met during the night are nocturnal, and that because they stay up all night, they must sleep during the day.
I won't spoil the ending, but let's just say that staying up all night doesn't turn out to be quite as much fun as Little Bear hoped.

I love bedtime stories where the main character is going to bed themselves. It seems to set the right mood for little ones to drift off too. :-)
ReplyDeleteTotally agree Vickie. This one is actually a little long for Rosalie at the moment, but she likes the pictures :)
DeleteOh those illustrations are so gorgeous - they make me want to snuggle up under a blanket just looking at them! And I totally agree with both of you, books where the main character is going to bed are great for persuading small people that it might also be bedtime for them!
ReplyDeleteI know, me too! Especially today when the weather is so cold & yucky :)
