On Choosing to Become a WAHM

That's it. The security of employment, a regular wage and paid holiday are gone. After 11 months of maternity leave I have resigned from my position as Marketing Executive to become a work at home mum (WAHM).

I've been doing some freelance work to keep my brain active whilst on maternity leave, but it was a big step to wave goodbye to the security of employment. So why did I do it?

Because, having nurtured my baby over the past months I now want to raise my child - I want to teach her about the simple things in life, I want to help her understand language, numbers and science, and I want to see her grow and change every day. But, unfortunately, we can't afford to do this with just one income.

So becoming a part time WAHM seemed like the perfect solution. I work whilst Rosalie naps, and during the evenings and at weekends when Jim can look after her. I'm not foolish enough to think it's going to be easy, but at least this way I won't be missing out on raising my daughter, and neither will I be stepping away completely from the world of work.

How do I feel about it all right now?

• Excited to be starting a new venture
• Anxious about losing the security of full time paid employment
• Grateful to my husband for supporting my decision
• Relieved not to have to send Rosalie to nursery
• Nervous about my ability to be successful
• Eager to launch my freelance business properly
• Worried that I will end up doing both jobs halfway
